Sunday Specials: Family Art Day, Jazz at the Chimes

Local residents looking for a little close-at-hand culture today have two great choices: Family Art Day at the Piedmont Center for the Arts (PCA)and the VNote Ensemble in the final Jazz at the Chimes concert of the 2013 season.

PCA, at 801 Magnolia Ave., will welcome families free from noon to 3 p.m. to view the center's first juried art show. There will be art activities and cookies for the kids, refreshments and a look at the "Return to Simplicity" exhibit for adults and older children.

At the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, the VNote Ensemble performs at 2 p.m., with the cuatro and bandola — Latin American stringed instruments — added to the more familiar flute, saxophone, bass and percussion. (Hear them play in the attached video.)

Tickets are $15 general, $10 for students and seniors, cash only, available at the door. The box office opens at 12:30 p.m. and the doors at 1:30 p.m. Seating is limited.
