What's Closed on Thanksgiving in Piedmont & Oakland

Nearly all public agencies will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, and quite a few will be closed the following day.

BART will run a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day but will have extra-long trains for the expected crowds of shoppers on what's become known as Black Friday.

Here's run-down of what's open and closed.

Piedmont

Piedmont city offices will be closed Thursday and Friday. Piedmont public schools are closed this week; classes will resume Monday, Dec. 2. Garbage collection will be delayed by one day for customers whose normal collection day is Thursday or Friday.

Oakland

Oakland city offices, services and libraries will be closed Thursday and Friday except for emergency services. The Oakland Animal Shelter will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but open on Friday. The Broadway Shuttle will not operate on Thursday but will return to a normal schedule on Friday. Oakland public schools are closed this week; classes will resume Monday, Dec. 2. Garbage collection will be delayed by one day for customers whose normal collection day is Thursday or Friday.

Thursday is a holiday, with no charge for parking at meters. The City of Oakland is offering free parking in commercial districts on Friday, Saturday and all Saturdays in December. See "Oakland to Offer Free Parking for Holiday Shoppers" for details of where free parking will be in effect.

Post Office, federal agencies

Thanksgiving Day in a national holiday, and post offices and federal offices will be closed. Friday is not a U.S. government holiday, though some offices may reduce hours of service that day.

Department of Motor Vehicles

DMV offices, including the one in El Cerrito, will be closed Thursday and Friday.

BART, AC Transit, SF Bay Ferry

BART will operate on a Sunday schedule on Thursday beginning at 8 a.m. On Friday, it will run full-length trains all day starting at 6 a.m

AC Transit will also operate a Sunday schedule on Thursday on both local and transbay lines.

San Francisco Bay Ferry: No service on any routes Thanksgiving Day. On Friday, ferries on the Alameda-Oakland-San Francisco route will operate on a normal weekday schedule, with a weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday. There will be no service to and from Harbor Bay Thursday through Sunday.
