Home prices are on the rise and, according to at least one report, are expected to increase 3.3 percent a year through 2017.

Part of the reason is the lack of inventory, causing multiple bids on houses. Another reason is low interest rates. Another is an improvement in consumer credit, which encourages banks to loan more money.

For fun, we thought we'd look for the most expensive home on the market in Piedmont that we could find.

What we came up with is this six-bedroom, six-bathroom house at 268 La Salle Ave. that's listed at $5.4 million.

The home, built in 1930, is 8,646 square feet. It sits on two-thirds of an acre and contains an au pair suite and a media rooom.
