Berkeley-Based Company Recalls Organic Macadamia Butter, Nuts

Macadamias from Hawaii contaminated with Salmonella spurred the butter and nut recall.

Living Tree Community Foods of Berkeley is recalling Organic Macadamia Nuts and Organic Macadamia Butter due to a possible Salmonella contamination.

The recall is for 4-ounce, clear plastic pouches of nuts, and for Organic Macadamia Butter in an 8-ounce glass jar, with a Living Tree Community label on it -- both sold in California stores and through mail orders from Dec. 11 to Feb.3, company officials said.

FDA testing with the nut supplier, Mahina Mele, based in Captain Cook, HA, found the presence of Salmonella in organic macadamia nuts, according to the report.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
