Calling All Captains: Derby Day Is Friday

The annual event at Pleasant Hill Aquatic Park puts locals at the helm of homemade boats for a race across the pool.

If you've ever wanted to captain your own boat, Derby Day is your chance.

All you need is some creativity, ingenuity and craft supplies — and the bravery to board your own homemade boat in a contest of wits and determination.

Derby Day takes place at Pleasant Hill Aquatic Park on Friday, July 19. Participants put their engineering skills to the test and design a boat out of cardboard, recyclables, and duct tape. The race then starts at 2 p.m., when all boats compete to get across the pool.

Preregistration is required by Wednesday, July 17. For rules or information, call (925) 682-0896.

Have you taken part in Derby Day before? How did you make your boat and how did it fare? Share your experience in the comments.
