Where To Live the Farm Life for a Day in the East Bay

Make hay while the sun shines and take a tour of a working farm near Pleasant Hill. Here's a list of local opportunities for all the family.

ARDENWOOD HISTORIC FARM — 34600 Ardenwood Blvd., Fremont
This working farm hosts a variety of free activities Thursday through Sunday for adults and children alike, including animal feeding at 3 p.m., blacksmithing demonstrations between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., tours of the restored Patterson House Museum — a 19-room Queen Anne Victorian farm house, train rides and more.

The farms is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 to $5 and free children under age 4. Visit www.ebparks.org for more information.

FOREST HOME FARMS — 19953 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon
The 16-acre former farm of the Boone family is now a municipal historic park in San Ramon. It is located at the base of the East Bay Hills and is divided into two parts by Oak Creek. The Boone House is a 22-room Dutch colonial that has been remodeled several times since it was built in 1900. Also on the property are a barn built in the period from 1850 to 1860; the Victorian-style David Glass House, dating from the late 1860s to early 1870s; a storage structure for farm equipment and automobiles; and a walnut processing plant.

SIENNA RANCH FARMS — 3232 Deer Hill Rd., Lafayette
Sienna Ranch is a privately owned, 21-acre ranch in Lafayette near the intersection of Hwy 680 and 24. The ranch offers family days once a month, which cost $85 in advance and includes admission for up to five people, plus pony and horse rides, archery, hayrides, animal visits and more.
