'Controlled Burn' Scorches 2,650 Acres; 90% Containment Sunday

The prescribed burn in East County had that jumped out of control and blackened about 2,650 acres had the blaze about 90 percent contained at dawn Sunday, CalFire officials said.

More than 600 firefighters worked on the fire lines, about 30 miles east of Julian.

The fire did not pose a threat to any structures as it charred the desert mountain area north of Scissors Crossing, CalFire reported. Four of the 612 firefighters working the lines sustained minor injuries.

The state firefighting agency was conducting a prescribed burn, intended to be about 100 acres, when an unexpected wind shift caused the blaze to jump the containment lines around 12:20 p.m. Thursday, fire officials said.

The blaze was off San Felipe Road north of Highway 78 , according to CalFire.
