Update: ‘Great Fire’ at 2,000 Acres in Scissors Crossing Area as of Sunday Morning

The fire was spreading to the northeast.

The was reported at 2,000 acres Sunday. An evacuation advisory has been issued for parts of Julian.

Fire lines have been cut in heavy brush around just 5 percent of the fire, on the south side of state Route 78 near Scissors Crossing, where Route 78 intersects Great Southern Overland Route of 1849.

The California Highway Patrol has closed state Route 78 from Scissors Crossing to Wynola Road on the Banner side, and motorists are advised to avoid travelling to Julian. Traffic between San Diego and Borrego Springs was diverted to a lengthy detour using Route 79 and County Road S-2 through Warner Springs.

The blaze was reported about 12:55 p.m. Saturday and the cause remained under investigation, according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik.

The fire initially burned west, but a shift in the wind direction caused the blaze to head northeast toward the desert, away from populated areas, Provaznik said. The burning area is owned by California State Parks and the Bureau of Land Management, Provaznik said.

There are currently 51 engines, 43 fire crews, five bulldozers, 13 water tenders, five helicopters, eight airtankers and 1,019 firefighters working the fire.
