Sustainable Ramona, a grass roots group organized to foster sustainability in Ramona, will host a Zoom presentation for the community.

Sustainable Ramona, a grass roots group organized to foster sustainability in Ramona, will host a Zoom presentation for the community to highlight Waste Management and Sustainable Gardening on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Speakers will share ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve garden output through waste management measures that include recycling, composting, and worm farming.
- “Recycling Right: Why Keeping Accepted Items EMPTY, DRY, and LOOSE is Vital”- Steve Weihe, Department of Public Works, County of San Diego – Recycling Specialist II. Recycling Right and Getting Back to Basics. By Recycling Right (EMPTY, DRY, and LOOSE) and keeping liquids, food and plastic bags out of your recycling bin, you’ll keep workers safe and help ensure that your paper, cardboard and cartons, plastic bottles, tubs, jugs and containers, glass bottles and jars and metal and aluminum cans and foil are recycled and live on as a new product.
- “Composting: Better Soil AND Better Climate” – Jennifer Galey, Senior Environmental Educator & Fair Liaison, Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. Learn how composting helps to grow a better garden AND helps sequester greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to her education work with Solana, Jennifer has developed educational exhibits and workshops over the past ten years for backyard farming at the San Diego County Fair that include composting techniques, organic gardening, beekeeping, water conservation, and waste diversion.
- "Vermicomposting - the Fun Art of Worm Farming" - Rev. Tracy Barnowe, Minister of First Congregational Church of Ramona and long-time Vermicomposter and Worm Farmer. Vermicomposting with eisenia foetida "red wiggler" worms can reduce household and city-wide greenwaste dramatically, and produce multiple environmentally-beneficial products. Learn about the simple and incredibly sustainable and environmentally friendly art of vermicomposting in Ramona's unique climate locale.
A key objective of Sustainable Ramona is to connect groups who are either already involved in sustainability activities or want to learn more. Many groups in Ramona already are contributing, either by composting, creating electricity through solar panels, using an electric vehicle, or planting trees. By working together as a community, the goal is to increase our effectiveness.
