As Shut-Ins Clamor For Fresh Bread, Dudley's Bakery Biz Booms
The iconic Santa Ysabel shop & deli is hiring as folks hunker down & demand soars for its baked goods during the trying coronavirus crisis.
SANTA YSABEL, CA — While the California restaurant and food industry is struggling to stay alive during the coronavirus crisis, one longtime, local bakery actually is hiring more workers to fill community needs and keep up with demand for its fresh baked goods.
Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel expanded its operating hours from five to seven days a week, plus is looking to hire bakers to help fill orders for its unique pastries, pies, fruit bars and — in particular — bread.
The bakery, established in 1963, sells its goods wholesale to such regional supermarkets as Vons, Albertsons, Stump's Market and Major Market, and managers attribute its steady business to more families preparing meals at home during the critical COVID-19 shutdowns.

During these trying times, the bakery and deli in Santa Ysabel is offering 50-percent discounts to first responders and healthcare workers. Dudley's also wants to make its products available to senior-care and residential facilities, and such organizations that may be affected by coronavirus woes can call (760) 765-4088 to possibly arrange for special deliveries.
"We are grateful to have such an incredible team and the ability to meet the needs of our San Diego family," said Lydia Bilic, Dudley's Bakery co-owner. "Generations of San Diegans have made Dudley's part of their family tradition, and we are proud to be able to serve our community in a time of need."

The bakery's new hours are Mondays through Thursdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special seniors-only shopping hours Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
