Southern California Solar Tour was the largest tour in the state
Hundreds of San Diego and Orange County residents gained the tools and knowledge to build their own clean energy future
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (October 15, 2019) - The 24th Annual National Solar Tour took the country by solar-storm the other weekend on October 5-6. The tour was presented nationally by two nonprofits, American Solar Energy Society and Solar United Neighbors, and included over 850 solar open houses across 46 states. Solar tours featuring roof-mounted and ground-mounted solar energy systems, battery storage systems, electric vehicles and energy efficient designs attracted thousands of Americans interested in learning how they can reduce their carbon footprint and electric utility bill by changing the way they generate energy for their homes and businesses.
Locally, the Southern California Solar Tour was co-hosted by long-standing solar energy and battery storage developer Sullivan Solar Power, and brought together hundreds of residents who attended solar+storage seminars and solar open houses across San Diego and Orange County. The seminars provided a place for learning and discussion on solar technology, battery storage, policy updates, time-of-use rates, system design, how to choose a solar provider, the sunsetting federal tax credit and more. During the seminars, attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with nationally certified energy practitioners, Community Choice Energy and climate change experts from Climate Action Campaign and Fallbrook Climate Action Team, as well as representatives from leading cleantech industries including Panasonic Solar, Everest Solar Systems, Energy Loan Network and LG Solar.
“When I founded Sullivan Solar Power 15 years ago, I set out to fundamentally change the way we generate electricity, creating a case study in Southern California that shows we can power our needs by the sun, ” said founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power, Daniel Sullivan. “On October 5, along with our amazing clients, suppliers and nonprofit partners, we made that a reality by organizing one of the largest solar tours in America, in conjunction with the National Solar Tour, where thousands of Americans also took the step to explore energy independence.”

Following the seminars, participants were invited to continue on the solar tour to view a variety of solar energy systems in their neighborhoods. Each of the systems featured on the tour were custom designed by Sullivan Solar Power to meet that specific home’s energy needs and were installed by state-certified union electricians. Several homes featured battery storage, electric vehicles and electric vehicle chargers paired with solar energy systems. The solar open houses allowed participants speak directly with their neighbors who have already made the switch to solar and ask them about the entire solar process from the consumer’s perspective.
Next year will mark the 25th Annual National Solar Tour and there are already plans to bring the tour’s excitement back to Southern California. As San Diego and Orange County communities continue to progress their climate action plan goals and adopt programs like Community Choice Energy, educational opportunities like the National Solar Tour are of utmost importance to keep residents informed about their clean energy options.
