Youth Fishing Derby at Lake Poway on Saturday

Lake Poway will be stocked with trout through May and will offer special promotions for the season.

Youth Fishing Derby

The El Cajon Youth Fishing Derby will be held at the lake from sunrise to noon Saturday. Children under age 15 can enter free of charge. A free barbecue lunch will be provided and awards will be given at 1 p.m., with a raffle and prizes for age-division winners. Grand prizes will also be awarded for the Kid’s Greatest Fishing Story Contest.   

Families can stay overnight on Friday to avoid very early morning driving. Registration for camping is $15. The evening includes a free pizza dinner sponsored by Baker Oil Tool and a fishing seminar to ensure that the kids' fishing rods/reels are in proper working order and rigged with the appropriate tackle.

Families will need to bring their own camping supplies and food to barbeque.  Grills are available, but you are encouraged to bring your own. Families may start setting up campsites at 7 a.m. Friday morning.  No alcohol is permitted.

*Please note: Lake Poway will close for fishing and boating Feb. 2-3. Parents are encouraged to assist children during the tournament, but will not be permitted to fish. Motor boats will only be rented to the parent/guardian of a Youth Fishing Derby participant.

General Fishing

Lake Poway generally opens for fishing and boating at sunrise Wednesday through Sunday and closes at sunset. Seniors 55+ and military receive reduced rates. State fishing licenses are not required.

• Feb. 20, President's Day Special: 25 percent off fishing boat rentals
• March 16, BOGO: Buy one fishing permit and receive a free permit of equal value for the following day.
• April 18, BOGO: Buy one fishing permit and receive a free permit of equal value for the following day.
• May 10, BOGO: Buy one fishing permit and receive a free permit of equal value for the following day.

The full-service Lake Poway Grill and Tackle offers fishing permits, bait, boat rentals, grill items and refreshments.
