Basketball: Kamehameha 40, Santa Margarita 35

Eagles score a season low to fall in the championship of a Hawaii tournament game.


With its lowest scoring output of the season, Santa Margarita Catholic fell in the championship game of the Merv Lopes Hoops Classic in Hawaii on Monday. 

The Eagles were beaten by the island's eighth-ranked team, Kamehameha, 40-35. 

The offensive output wasn't even close to Santa Margarita's previous low, 49 points, in a 65-49 loss to San Diego St. Augustine in the finals of the Santa Margarita Christmas Classic. 

This is the second consecutive tournament in which the Eagles finished runner-up, and it ended a run of nine victories in 10 games. 

Brett Oosdyke led Santa Margarita (10-3) with nine points, and Joe Furstinger had seven. 

The Eagles scored only four points in the second quarter and trailed at halftime, 21-11. They pulled to within 29-26 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Santa Margarita's next game will be its Trinity League opener at Mater Dei on Jan. 8.
