Be the Someone

Use your time and talents to benefit our community.

(tonivans.com)

I am married to a two-time failed candidate for RSM City Council and I am proud of it. He loves our community and has ideas on how it could be improved such as implementing a 311 system, organizing youth job fairs and enhanced business development. After the second loss, he decided that he didn’t need to be on the council to make a difference. That is when the plan for Good Morning Rancho, which highlights small businesses and community needs, came to fruition.

Often in our society, we see a need and think ‘Somebody should do something’. But who is that ‘somebody’? Who is responsible? I propose we all are responsible. This is our community. We can improve it with our unique talents and our donation of time. We don’t need to be elected officials. We can be the ‘Somebody’ and do ‘something’ to help make a difference. Oprah Winfrey said it best on her finale ‘My great wish … is that you carry whatever you are supposed to doing, carry that forward and don’t waste any more time. Use your life to serve the world’.

My husband saw the need of small businesses and has now filmed over 25 pro bono videos to help. Lisa Boehnke of Our Town videos joined the cause by using her talents to film the segments. I’ve seen James Gabbriellini donate his time by creating awesome Halloween displays to the delight of local children. He is also giving a free fishing lesson this Sunday. Chris O’Connor created RSM Cares Food Pantry which offers food twice a month to those in need. There are many others in our city that have shared their talents and time. What needs do you see? How can you become the ‘somebody’?
