Santa Margarita Little League Falls In Double Elimination

They went all the way to Williamsport, as was their goal, falling short of making it to the finals. Rancho Santa Margarita remains proud.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — It was a long, magical season for the Santa Margarita All Stars, and family and friends will tip their caps to the boys when they come back home after their run at the Little League World Series. On Sunday, they played the Southeast Rancho Santa Margarita fell on the wrong side of a 16-0 no hitter. That game was called in the fifth on the mercy rule.

On Monday, the West team battled against the Mid-Atlantic but weren't strong enough to rally at the end of the game, falling 12-9 in double elimination.

The West took an early lead in the first inning, when a wild pitch by Garrett Drew scored the first run for the West.

Mid-Atlantic returned with a strong top of the second, scoring three runs. R. J. Vashey homered off of Joey Gray,driving in one run, and Charile Meglio homered to bring in two more.

The third inning saw the West scoring five runs, driven by a double hit by Drew Rutter, a Single by A. J. Gamulao, and a fielder's choice by Matt Haddad, along with a single at the bat of Danny Lawler.

It wasn't enough, as the Mid-Atlantic boys scored nine runs in the third, after a home run, a wild pitch, and singles by Anthony Abbonizio, Tai Mann, and Chris Cartnick, a double by J.R. Osmond and a groundout.

Joey Gray took the loss for the West, throwing for four and a third innings. Gray allowed 12 runs, 15 hits, he struck out two with no walks.

The West saw 11 hits in the game, from A.J., Tyler Ankrum, Joey Gray and Drew Rutter, each collecting multiple hits.
