RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Thousands of schools will take part in a "walking school bus" across the Southland on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Every year, on the first Wednesday in October, thousands of families gather to walk to school, promoting physical activity, safety, and reduction in traffic, according to Maria Minaglia of the Orange County Health Department. "With more kids walking there are fewer cars on the road," she said. That means less traffic congestion around school zones and neighborhoods.
"It's October, that means it's time to Walk and Roll!" OC Health said in a recent public service message. "This is the first time of year for many who will walk to school every day."

Kids can socialize and talk to parents, and it's a great time to go hand in hand, and hands free of mobile devices.
"Taking the opportunity to reinforce safe pedestrian skills and walking in groups is a great way to encourage safety," Minaglia said. "Being on their own two feet also encourages independence."

Walking is a great way to get your body energized and ready to learn, studies have shown. Campuses across Orange County will participate.
The event promotes physical activity and community engagement and teaches students the importance of pedestrian safety, officials say.
