Anonymous Buyer Purchases AES Power Plant In Redondo Beach
The deal will likely spark a land use debate, and voters have rejected changing the zoning laws in the past.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – Redondo Beach is gearing up for another land use debate after an anonymous buyer purchased the AES power plant. After two years on the market, Mayor Bill Brand told The Beach Reporter that the deal will likely be finalized in a month or so.
The final sale price is unknown, according to ABC7. The buyer will be responsible for demolition and remediation after purchasing the 51-acre property "as is," the news station reported. Last year, the city of Redondo Beach offered to buy the land for $40 million.
The property is currently zoned for parkland or power generation, although the utility company was marketing it for non-industrial uses, The Beach Reporter said. Brand told the newspaper it's unusual for a buyer of a large and high-profile property not to work with the city early on.

“I’m looking forward to working with whoever it is and maximize the public benefit of whatever happens here,” Brand told The Beach Reporter.
Voters have rejected several efforts to change the zoning law to allow residential and commercial projects in the past, according to ABC7.
