More than Half of the 50 Most Expensive Places to Rent are in California: Report
At one Southern California city, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment was close to $5,000.
As the affordable housing shortage in California continues to grow, more and more renters are feeling the squeeze. According to a new report by an apartment rental website, more than half of the 50 most expensive places to rent an apartment in the country are in California.
Topping the list is Santa Monica, where a one-bedroom unit cost an average of $4,799, according to Apartment Guide.
The rental figures were computed by using the November 2016 listing prices on ApartmentGuide.com and its sister site, Rent.com.

Five of the most expensive places to rent are in the Los Angeles area. Venice was fifth at $4,563, Playa Vista and Marina del Rey was 17th and 18th on the list with the median rents of $3,327 and $3,320, respectively.
Culver City came in at No. 23 with an average rent of $3,161.

Other California cities on the list are, unsurprisingly, located in the San Francisco Bay area.
The city of San Francisco was No. 6 on the list with a median rent of $3,880. Most of the high rents in the area can be attributed to the tech industries as most of the Silicon Valley area cities are on the list.
Belvedere-Tiburon was No. 7 on the list with the average rent of $3,800, followed by Redwood City and Mountain View at Nos. 14 and 15 with the median rents of $3,359 and $3,355, respectively.
Foster City, Belmont, Los Gatos and Sunnyvale are also on the list with the average rents of $2,914, $2,902, $2,890.66 and $2,886, respectively.
