Congresswoman Speier Hosts Town Hall at Cañada College

Her ninth town hall this year will be titled "A Conversation about America."

From the Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier: Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-14) will host her ninth town hall this year, titled “A Conversation about America,” at Cañada College, 4200 Farm Hill Boulevard in Redwood City on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Speier will be joined by sociologist and author Arlie Hochschild. Speier will discuss Professor Hochschild’s latest book Strangers in Their Own Land and answer questions from the audience.

In Strangers in Their Own Land, Professor Hochschild takes readers on a thought-provoking journey from her liberal hometown Berkeley, California to Louisiana bayou country, a stronghold of the Tea Party and the conservative right. For five years she meets and gets to know people who strongly oppose many of her ideas and beliefs, but she still manages to find common ground with them about concerns that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children.Strangers in Their Own Land was a finalist for the National Book Award 2016 and one of “6 Books to Understand Trump’s Win” according to the New York Times the day after the election.
