Two Redwood City High Schools Ranked as Best in the Country

Two Redwood City high schools, Summit Prep and Everest, are among those ranked as the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2019 U.S. News Best High Schools, released on April 30, ranks over 17,000 public high schools out of a review of more than 23,000 nationwide. Within the list are five high Bay Area schools that are part of Summit Public Schools, a network of 11 college-prep schools that serve diverse communities throughout California and Washington. The Summit schools include: Summit Preparatory Charter High (Summit Prep), Summit Public School: Shasta, Summit Public School: Tahoma, Summit Public School: Rainier and Everest Public High School.

“We are honored to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report,” said Summit Public Schools Superintendent Anson Jackson. “Our team is thrilled that not only one but five of our high schools received this recognition. These rankings are a testament to the hard work and determination of not only our talented teachers but our amazing students. Our students’ perseverance coupled with the thoughtful mentorship of our faculty is one of the reasons why Summit graduates finish high school college-ready.”

Summit Prep ranked #17 in California and the other four Summit schools ranked in the top 200 in California: Shasta #62, Tahoma #100, Everest #105, Rainier #179.

U.S. News judges schools by six indicators: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance and graduation rates. Each school is given an overall score out of a possible 100 points; the ranked Summit schools received an average overall score of 96.26. All eligible Summit schools were recognized.

Summit Prep was also recently named one of the most challenging high schools on the Jay Mathews Challenge Index.

Summit’s innovative project-based learning model allows students to engage in deeper learning and infuse their interests into their education, helping them to develop the habits and skills that lead to academic and personal success, including college acceptance. Summit founded the inaugural school, Summit Prep, in 2003. Since 2007, more than 1,800 students have graduated from a Summit school. Summit alumni complete college at twice the national average.
