Giants Great Jim Davenport Dies at 82

The Gold Glove winner passed away Thursday night in Redwood City.

REDWOOD CITY, CA - If you grew up in the Bay Area listening to Giants games on a transistor radio, you’ve lost one of the loves of your childhood -- Jim Davenport has died. He passed away Thursday night in Redwood City.

The third baseman came up to the Giants in 1958, the year the team moved to San Francisco. He played his entire career for the team, retiring in 1970.

Davenport won a Gold Glove in 1962 and earned a spot on the All-Star team.

The Giants issued a statement that included a comment by president Larry Baer, “The passing of Jim Davenport brings great sadness to our organization. Jim had a wonderful spirit and was a great Giant. We will always remember Davvy. We express our deepest condolences to his family and will have them in our thoughts and prayers.”

He is survived by his wife, daughter and sons.
