'History' Unveiled in Downtown Walking Tour

History enthusiasts will gather in Redwood City this evening to celebrate the creation of a downtown walking tour highlighting historical landmarks.

Redwood City community development planner Charles Jany said the idea for the "Path of History" walk came from City Councilwoman Barbara Pierce, who proposed the idea after seeing similar walking tours in other California cities.

"The trick of it is, you get to pick it up in any spot and see the key landmark features in the city," Jany said.

The tour covers about 10 downtown blocks and features 12 plaques describing the background of various landmarks, like the 1910 main courthouse, and Fire Station No. 1, which was built in 1921 and later converted into the city's main library.

Free brochures with a map pointing out the Path of History's featured sites can be picked up at a kiosk at the corner of Main Street and Broadway. The brochure can also be found online at www.redwoodcity.org.

City council members, sponsors and residents will attend a celebration marking the installation of the walking tour tonight at 6 p.m. at 2209 Broadway.
