Summit Prep Student Who Tried to Rape Teacher to Appear in Court

A former student at the high school who grabbed a teacher at knifepoint and attempted to rape her earlier this year will appear in court Monday.

A former Redwood City high school student charged with trying to rape one of his teachers at knifepoint is scheduled to appear in San Mateo County Superior Court on Monday.

David Andres Velasquez, 20, who has been charged with kidnapping, assault with intent to commit rape, false imprisonment and making criminal threats, will appear in court for a pretrial conference at 1:30 p.m., according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

On Jan. 23, Velasquez allegedly waited for his former female special education teacher in a parking garage at Summit Preparatory Charter High School, located at 890 Broadway, according to police.

Velasquez allegedly grabbed the teacher from behind, put a knife to her side and ordered her to walk to her car and get in, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

The teacher recognized Velasquez' voice and intentionally dropped her keys to delay him, Wagstaffe said.

The attacker then pushed the woman to the ground and pried her legs apart with his elbow, then laid on top of her and thrust his hips against hers, prosecutors said.

Another teacher entered the garage and screamed at the man, and he got up and ran away.

Velasquez was taken into custody later that evening, police said.

Velasquez pleaded not guilty to all charges in February. He remains in custody

The case is set for jury trial on Feb. 19.

The incident prompted Summit Prep officials to re-evaluate and update the school's safety measures and security, including in parking garages and areas.
