Mary Poppins JR. Showcases the Power of K-8 Kids Working Together

Redwood City K-8 School Integrates Arts with Education by Weaving This Weekend's Musical Production into In-Classroom Learning and Fun

Mary Poppins JR. showcases the magic of K-8 students together at work!

San Carlos Children's Theater and Roy Cloud School will bring the story of the beloved Banks' nanny to the stage this Friday and Saturday, March 22 at 7pm, and March 23 at 1pm and 7pm, at McKinley Auditorium.

While Mary Poppins' original songs took two and a half years to write (fun fact!), for two and a half months nearly 80 students at Roy Cloud Elementary have been rehearsing, singing and dancing their way to staging a fabulous show for the whole community to enjoy.

Amid last fall's debate over K-8 vs. K-5/6-8 as a school model, Mary Poppins JR. is a real-world example of K-8 students learning and working together, as well as a successful example of a local school integrating arts with daily education across a variety of grades and age groups. Each show features a K-2 Chorus, with main actors, singers and dancers from grades 3-8 .

Integrating education with the upcoming production, Roy Cloud's younger classrooms have been studying Mary Poppins' stories by P.L. Travers. Main cast actors, Bert and Mary, made a surprise visit to those classrooms recently to help bring the stories to life. They dropped off goodie bags of chalk and encouraged the younger students to ask questions and share what they've been learning in class. Many of those younger students are already part of the show in the ensemble chorus.

This week is Tech Week, as the cast and producers put on the finishing touches, and the show's tech team also features many upperclassmen both from Roy Cloud and also from other area schools including Northstar, Saint Francis High School and Woodside, furthering the feeling of community involvement and support. Many of these student volunteers are previous Roy Cloud School students and actors!

Executive Producer Donna Avanzino, who is also executive director of the San Carlos Children's Theater, Director Margaret Marshall, Choreographer Daniel Giray, Vocal Director Lisa Bock, Artistic Director Caitlin Savage, Chorus Director Ruthanne Smith, Technical Director Jim Cole, Producer Jen Clark, and House Coordinator Rochelle Romer have been working in partnership with the school and more than 100 parent volunteers to stage an incredible production of the popular musical, with colorful costumes, sets, and plenty of fun to go around!

It will be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and fun for the whole family.

Come out and enjoy the show this weekend! http://roycloudschool.eventbri...
