Mountain-Themed Film Festival Coming To Redwood City

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival will stop in Redwood City this month as part of its world tour.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A famed outdoor-themed film festival is coming to Redwood City this month. The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival, making a world tour, will stop at the Fox Theatre in Downtown Redwood City on Feb. 27-28, benefiting the local winter sports nonprofit, Snowlands.

This year's films are "a collection of inspiring action, environmental and adventure films from the festival held every fall in Banff, Canada," the festival said in a news release.

The two showings start at 7 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at the Fox Theatre website.

The world tour is hosted by REI, the outdoor retailer, and each of the festival's five Bay Area stops benefits a different local nonprofit.

Night 1 (Feb. 27):

Charge (2019, Canada, 5 minutes) Four top freeskiers and a World Champion drone pilot are dropped at Chatter Creek, BC for one week. Their instructions: charge as hard as you can everyday.

Camel Finds Water (2019, US, 9 minutes) Trevor found the hull of an abandoned fishing boat in a field. He brought it home and built it back to a sea-worthy state over the course of a summer. Then, he took it on its maiden voyage to British Columbia in search of waves.

Into The Canyon (2019, USA, 45 minutes) Pete McBride and Kevin Fedarko tell a story of extreme physical hardship where the bonds of friendship are stretched and the timeless beauty of the Grand Canyon becomes meditation and ultimately a cautionary tale for our complex relationship with the natural world.

INTERMISSION

Life of Pie (2019, USA, 12 minutes) When Jen Zeuner and Anne Keller moved to the tiny, conservative high desert town of Fruita, Colorado almost twenty years ago, it was not on the map as far as mountain biking was concerned and they were on the fringe and a bit ostracized. Now they’re at the very heart and soul of the community.

A Nordic Skater (2018, Lithuania, 5 minutes) The story of a man who uses every sense he has to travel on thin ice while Nordic skating in the Oslo region of Norway. He tells the story of how the little known sport of Nordic skating came to play a big part in his life.

Reel Rock 14 - The High Road (2019, USA, 18 minutes) Highball bouldering ace Nina Williams flexes her guns and tests her nerves well into the no-fall zone. Siblings (2019, Canada, 3 minutes) A short coming of age film that celebrates childhood and the relationship between siblings.

Electric Greg (2019, Canada, 5 minutes) Having seen the affects of climate change first-hand, Greg Hill sets out to climb 100 peaks without burning any fossil fuels. But the question is: will it make a difference?

The Flip (2019, USA, 3 minutes) French Skydiver Remi Angeli must face his fears in order to explore new expressions of movement while BASE jumping in Mexico. On the other side of his fear he discovers life in its purest form.

Night 2 (Feb. 28)

Good Morning (2018, France, 4 minutes) Every day, skier Richard Permin falls into his mundane morning routine. Right after getting out of bed, he clicks on his skis and rides down the snowcovered rooftops of Avoriaz.

Thabang (2019, South Africa, 13 minutes) Thabang Madiba somehow found his way into the world of trail running and in the last few years has become everyone’s favourite in the South African trail scene.
