Nearly 2 in 5 K-8 Students Truant in 2010-2011

The Redwood City School District's suspension and expulsion rate trended below the state and county's rates during the 2010-2011 school year.

Nearly two in five students in the were truant during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the State Department of Education's most recent data.

As students head back to school this month, parents and guardians are reminded to write notes when their child is absent or else the absence will be counted as a truant.

Parents and guardians should also try their best to make sure their students are on time because three or more tardies also count as a truant. The city has provided information on its website about safe drop-offs to ensure on-time arrivals in a safe manner.

During the same academic school year, approximately 25 percent of students in the county were truant compared to the state’s average of nearly 30 percent.

However, the school district’s expulsion rate was about the same as the county’s and state’s at 0.3 percent, and the expulsions substantially below at 5.9 percent compared to 8.35 percent and 11.4 percent at the county and state level, respectively.

Superintendent Jan Christensen said at a school board meeting that she was pleased with the change in climate, in suspensions and expulsions from previous years.
