Redwood City doctors and officials watched as construction crews raised a thousand pound metal structure to the top of the 7-story steel skeleton that will become the new Redwood City Hospital.

Hundreds of hospital staffers and construction workers had signed the white-painted metalwork called a parapet brace before a giant crane lifted it into place on the roof.

"This is so exciting," marveled Dr. Jim O'Donnell, physician-in-chief of the hospital who said he is looking forward to the hospital opening in late 2014.

"Topping out" is a traditional construction ceremony signaling the completion of a building's frame. Since December 5, 2011, ironworkers have assembled more than 10,000 steel beams using more than 40,000 bolts to complete the first phase of the new Kaiser Permanente Hospital.

Contractor Rudolph and Sletton of Redwood City said there had been no injuries on the project, so the parapet brace was topped by a living potted redwood tree to symbolize the good work and growth of the  building. Rooftop visitors will be able to see the signatures for many years to come.

With the frame complete, work will start on the concrete flooring and outside "skin" of the building and then an estimated 500 workers will begin putting in the  walls, windows, plumbing, electricity, air conditioning and heating, and technology.

"This will be a center for Kaiser Permanente's 21st Century health care," said Frank Beirne, the senior vice president and area manager at the medical center.
