Redwood City Man Struck Mother With Hammer, In Custody: Police

Police said the man, who was charged with attempted murder, was suffering from a mental health breakdown.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A Redwood City man was charged with attempted murder after police said he struck his mother in the head with a hammer while experiencing a mental health breakdown on Sunday.

According to a news release, Redwood City police responded to the attack in progress and arrested 25-year-old Benjamin Chouanard. Police claimed they were able to deescalate the situation and convince Chouanard to surrender peacefully.

His mother was taken to Stanford Hospital with a fractured skull. Chouanard is being held at San Mateo County Jail.
