Redwood City Names New Fire Chief After Nationwide Search

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Redwood City has named Ray Iverson, the Fire Chief for the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, as its next fire chief after a national recruitment.

The position, which has been open since Stan Maupin retired as fire chief last year, oversees fire services for Redwood City and San Carlos, a combined population of nearly 120,000 residents. Iverson will begin the role in June.

“I welcome the opportunity to make a positive impact on the communities of Redwood City and San Carlos,” Iverson said in a news release.

Iverson previously served as Deputy Fire Chief in San Mateo and has experience in various fire departments throughout northern California.

A San Mateo resident, Iverson is the President of the International Fire Service Foundation.

“Ray is a highly competent and experienced fire service leader and I am very pleased that he will be joining our team,” City Manager Melissa Stevenson said in a news release. “His deep background in fire prevention is welcome as both Redwood City and San Carlos experience strong development interest. His collaborative leadership style and strategic thinking will help us reimagine services to meet evolving community needs and to support financial sustainability.”
