Two More Peninsula Cities To Consider Hazard Pay Requirement
The city councils of Redwood City and San Carlos will discuss mandating hazard pay for grocery store employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Two more Peninsula cities will discuss ordinances mandating hazard pay for grocery store employees on Monday.
After both South San Francisco and San Mateo passed ordinances requiring large grocery stores to pay its employees an additional $5 an hour in hazard pay due to working on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city councils of Redwood City and San Carlos will discuss similar ordinances in their meetings on Monday.
Neither council is set to actually vote on the item, but they plan to discuss future consideration of hazard pay.

The San Carlos agenda states that it would consider agendizing an item and “direct staff to investigate this concept.” The Redwood City council’s staff report indicates that its hazard pay requirement would also be an additional $5 an hour.
San Mateo’s ordinance was passed by the council unanimously on Monday and also includes four hours of paid leave for employees to get their COVID-19 vaccinations.
