Woodside High School Athletes of the Week
Jacob Bujtor ('bouy-tore'), Junior, Boys' Varsity Soccer and Sophia Ashworth, Freshman, Girls' JV Basketball
Varsity Athlete: Jacob Bujtor (‘bouy-tore’), Junior
Sport: Boys’ Varsity Soccer
Coaches’ Lens (Head Coach-Darrell Ringman): “In each match we play, different players step up, filling gaps of effort, leadership and communication. On those days when no gaps and holes exist, we cannot be defeated. Today, in our fourth pre-season match against Mills, with half a dozen players on IR or otherwise unavailable to play, these Wildcats braved the storm and stepped onto the field to play for each other, generating a two-nil shut out in the process. Along the way, Jacob Bujtor had an assist, setting up Leo Gutierrez in the 7th minute, but netting one of his own on a delicious three-touch, turn-and-shoot tally from 35 out. Jacob’s high-energy, never-know-what-he’s-going-to-say-or-do persona is a positive and creative influence for Woodside and I’m optimistic about what it will bring as the Wildcats turn the new-year corner and head into the regular season after facing Sacred Heart Cathedral and Sacred Heart Prep in 10 and 21 days time, respectively.
Jacob Bujtor loves soccer for the “creativity and freedom” allowed on the field and the camaraderie of playing with his teammates. Bujtor believes the varsity squad has a “pretty solid chance of making it to CCS” this year. The outgoing and selfless Bujtor credits his coaches and friends for inspiring him to play soccer at such a high level, a sport he hopes to continue playing in college, preferably at Cal Poly, but any college that will also allow him to pursue the study of either engineering or economics. Looking forward, Bujtor hopes to maintain his 4.0 GPA and “stay fit”, although he still would like to enjoy pizza from ‘Speederia’ once in awhile.

Athlete: Sophia Ashworth, Freshman
Sport: Girls’ JV Basketball
Coaches Lens (Assistant Coach Erin Kilty): “Sophia’s hustle on the basketball court is undeniable and she never gives less than her best. She leads the team in steals and her team mates always admire her work ethic. When the team needed a change of attitude at half time during our game against Lowell, one of the players said, ‘We all need to start playing like Sophie.’”

This fiery 9th grader who loves the “teamwork and supportive nature of playing basketball,” has electrified the JV basketball team with her tremendous hustle and positive attitude. Sophia believes the JV team “will continue to improve”, as they progress through the season. Ashworth looks forward the M-A game and playing against her friend Maddie (also a point guard), who influenced her to truly “love the sport.” In the fall Sophia played water polo for the first time, and she appreciates the commonality in the two sports when they play “man to man.” She has enjoyed Mr. Ezrati’s biology class so much she is thinking about becoming a researcher or professor, but she also enjoys drama class. When not playing sports or working on school, she enjoys candles, listening to music, and the restaurant ‘Yat Sing’ for Chinese food.
