Adventurous Oakland Woman's Life Cut Short

OAKLAND, CA — A bicyclist was killed in a head-on collision with an SUV in the Oakland hills on Thursday afternoon, police said today.

The cyclist, identified by the Alameda County coroner's office as 28-year-old Tatyana Schmid of Oakland, collided with the SUV in the 7000 block of Skyline Boulevard near Elverton Drive at about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to police.

Schmid was a blogger and tour guide for Backroads, a hiking and biking company. According to her biography on Backroads, Schmid was born and raised in Minneapolis and led trips for Backroads south of the U.S. border in countries such as Panama, Costa Rica, Patagonia and Peru.

The website says Schmid studied photography and Spanish at Bennington College in Vermont, spent one year living and working in Chile and then got her job with Backroads.

The website said Schmid was "a lover of adventure, anything involving bikes, mountains, surfing, diving and, of course, delicious food, beer and wine."

According to Backroads, Schmid also could be found "singing and playing ukulele in various bands with other Backroads leaders around the Bay Area."

Schmid said on the social media site Couchsurfing that her mission was to "live life to the fullest, sing, dance, be active, see beautiful places, interact with the world, make connections, capture moments, live in the present, love, create and share."

Schmid said, "Living as a traveler couchsurfing has always been a mode of travel, even before this incredible network existed or I took part in it."
