OAKLAND, CA — Two Bay Area teachers on Tuesday were named as finalists for Presidential Awards of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Holly Brown of Moreland Middle School in San Jose was named a finalist in mathematics and Janice Coonrod of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland was named a finalist in science. There were six finalists in all from around the state.
"These teachers are bright stars in our educational system, and they're being nominated for this prestigious award because they serve as role models for other teachers, inspire students to study math and science, and serve as leaders in their school communities," Tony Thurmond, State
Superintendent of Public Instruction, said in a statement Tuesday.

"We want more teachers like them all across California so that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow," Thurmond added.
Each candidate for the award had to demonstrate mastery of their respective teaching subjects and leadership in education outside the classroom. They also had to submit a 30-minute video lesson.
