Does Hillegass and Alcatraz Need a Crosswalk?

The city of Oakland is evaluating a neighborhood request to place a crosswalk at the intersection Alcatraz and Hillegass avenues, near the Berkeley border. The intersection sees a lot of crossings by bicycle and foot as well as by cars.

The City of Oakland is studying a neighborhood request for a crosswalk at Alcatraz and Hillegass avenues near the Berkeley border, a city spokeswoman said.

Kritine Shaff, spokeswoman for the Oakland Public Works Agency, said Wednesday that the city has received such a request and is reviewing it.

Hillegass, which jogs slightly where it crosses Alcatraz, is a popular alternative route for bicyclists, pedestrians and autos instead of often congested College Avenue for traveling between Berkeley's Elmwood district and Claremont Avenue in Oakland.
