Is Oakland Bicycle Friendly?
The City Council looks at progress toward making Oakland a better place for bikes during the past five years.

At the end of December, Oakland will mark the conclusion of a 16-month period in which more bikeways were added to city streets than in the previous 35 years.
With an eye on more grants and greater recognition as a bicycle friendly community, the Oakland City Council's Public Works Committee was scheduled to certify Tuesday that the city's five-year-old Bicycle Master Plan is current and in compliance with state law.
In addition to touting the 28 miles of new bikeway striping completed since the fall of 2011, a report accompanying the resolution notes other achievements in the area of municipal bike-friendliness:

- Fourth by the amount of bicycle parking spaces per capita (following Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and Jacksonville);
- Sixth by the percentage of residents bicycling to work (following Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, and Sacramento);
- Sixteenth by miles of bike lanes per square mile of area.
