Local Parks: Clean and Green or a Mess?
Rockridge, Temescal and the North Oakland Hills got the best grades in a recent report card on Oakland city parks. Much of the credit goes to volunteers.

On average, parks in District 1 — which includes Rockridge, Temescal and the North Oakland Hills — were the best maintained city-owned green spaces in 2012, according to an article published Wednesday on Oakland Local.
District 1 also had the most parks maintained by volunteers, the article said.
Excellent scores went to Bushrod Park, Colby Park and the Frank Ogawa Firescape Garden, among others, but the Rockridge Temescal Greenbelt (Frog Park) was one of the most poorly maintained in the area, according to Oakland Local.

Parks throughout the city were graded by the Oakland Parks Coalition, a volunteer group, which presented its report to the city council's public works committee last month.
The coalition rates things such as restrooms, litter and drainage to produce a score for each of the city's 116 parks. Restrooms fared particularly badly in 2012, with the citywide score dropping nealry a full point on the four-point scale.
