Rockridge Bart Station Plaza Nearly Finished

Sometime in October the new Rockridge BART plaza will be open for business.

The first beneficiaries of the almost completed plaza at the Rockridge BART station were the elephants in the Oakland Zoo. As part of the renovation, construction crews removed an acacia tree from the site and its leaves fed the elephants for a week.

The rest of us will be able to enjoy the plaza on Oct. 7, when the curving concrete bench and 23 tons of Sierra Granite boulders open to the public. The rocks are a visual play on the neighborhood's name. The project cost around $400,000, with money coming from the city of Oakland, the Rockridge Communty Planning Council, parking fees collected from the station parking lot and BART.

What do you think of the new plaza? Will you miss the ivy planter?
