Running for a Better Oakland Mentors Youths with the Help of Donors and Volunteers
Local nonprofit prepares students for Oakland running events with charitable support
Each year, more than 200 students participate in Running for a Better Oakland’s (RBO) structured running program to train for 5K and half-marathon distances at various East Bay Area race events. The nonprofit encourages kindergarten through 12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles and habits through running. RBO matches students with running mentors and organizes training sessions every Saturday – rain or shine – around Oakland’s Lake Merritt and once or twice throughout the week at participating schools. RBO’s students are expected to participate in the Oakland Running Festival 5K and half-marathon this Sunday, April 2.
Infrastructure solutions firm HNTB Corporation’s Oakland office recently presented RBO with a donation of $1,500 to support local students by helping fund the program. The gift was presented by Peter Gertler, senior vice president at HNTB and RBO enthusiast.
HNTB’s contribution, along with other grants and personal donations, enables RBO to cover training costs, pay for race entry fees and provide equipment for the students. The exposure to running provides students with tips for healthy lifestyles, and teaches them self-esteem and confidence prior to their college years.
