State Title: Laney College Best In CA

Laney won the state community college football championship on Saturday.

OAKLAND, CA — The Laney College Eagles from Oakland won the state community college football championship on Saturday by defeating the Ventura College Pirates 40-35 in a game at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium.

The title, which means that Laney has the best community college football team in California, marks the first time the Eagles have won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) championship, according to the school.

However, the CCCAA's website says Laney won mythical state and national titles in 1966 during a 20-game win streak following the debut of its program in 1965. But there wasn't an official state championship game at that time.

Laney officials said the Eagles jumped out to a 23-0 lead advantage after the first 10 minutes of Saturday's game but Ventura responded by scoring 17 points just before the end of the first half to make the game close.

Ventura had a chance to take the lead when it got the ball trailing by 40-35 with a minute left in the game, but Laney's defense was able to stop Ventura and maintain the lead until the game ended.
