What's Going on With the Homeless Encampment on 42nd Street?

Contract negotiations between the city and a non-profit helping homeless in Oakland have led to a backlog in providing alternatives to the street.

Oakland's Public Works Agency told Patch that for the past week the department has been receiving at least two calls a day about the homeless encampment on 42nd Street between Telegraph Ave. and MLK, Jr. Blvd.

Public Works said that the city had been in contract negotiations with Operation Dignity, the non-profit that offers services to Oakland's homeless before the police get involved, and there's a two-month backlog in dealing with homeless situations in the city. A new contract was signed this month, according to Public Works.

Here's more information from the city's Housing and Community Development Department about resources for homeless Oaklanders
