What's Open, What's Closed for MLK Jr. Day in Oakland

The late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929, and his birthday is celebrated as a national holiday on the third Monday in January, which this year is Jan. 21.

Here's a list of what's open and closed in Oakland on Monday. 

Oakland city offices: Closed. Oakland Animal Shelter, Senior Centers, park restrooms closed. No street sweeping. Parking meter holiday — free parking.

Oakland public schools: Closed.

Oakland Public Library: Closed. Branch libraries will also be closed Tuesday, Jan. 22. 

Garbage, green waste and recycling service: Curbside collection of recycling, green waste and garbage will occur as normally scheduled.

BART will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Department of Motor Vehicles and other state of California offices, federal offices: Closed.

Banks: Most banks will be closed. 

Stores, businesses: Varies, though many will be open.
