Charges Filed Against Former 49er, Newly Signed Raider, Aldon Smith
The charges stem from an alleged drunk driving incident last month. Incidentally, the Raider announced his signing today.

Former San Francisco 49er Aldon Smith was charged today with three misdemeanors stemming from an alleged DUI hit-and-run last month in Santa Clara, prosecutors said.
The charges come on the same day the Oakland Raiders announced they have signed Smith.
Smith, 25, has been charged with misdemeanor DUI with a prior conviction and refusal to submit to a chemical test, hit-and-run with property damage, and vandalism resulting in damage under $400, prosecutors said. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 6.

On Aug. 6 around 8:45 p.m., Smith allegedly crashed into a parked car in a garage at a large complex in the 500 block of Moreland Way while he was positioning his vehicle into a spot, police said.

Officers arrived to the scene where initially Smith was nowhere to be found, but he returned a short time later, according to police. After Smith failed two sobriety tests, he was transported to the Police Department for processing and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose, police said.
He posted $26,000 bail the following morning and was released. Smith started his NFL career as a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. Smith became a free agent the day after his arrest when the 49ers released him after four seasons but expressed they would continue to support him.
In a statement today on adding Smith to the team, Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said, “Aldon is an extremely talented young player. We welcome him to the Raiders family and expect him to bring his best every day and be a great teammate,” Del Rio said.
Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie said. “We are confident that the Raiders provide an environment where Aldon can thrive through the support, structure and leadership within the building.”
“We are excited to have Aldon here in the Raiders family,” McKenzie said.
