Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- The Delta variant of COVID-19 has shown up in the Sacramento region. Officials in El Dorado County confirmed that they had their first case reported on Thursday from a specimen taken on June 2nd in the Diamond Springs/El Dorado ZIP code. (Tahoe City Daily Tribune)
- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento is accepting pre-applications for low income families from the Sacramento region. Families can purchase these homes with 0% interest and no down payment. Payments will never exceed 30% of the family's monthly gross income. The application takes only 3 minutes to complete. (KCRA Sacramento)
- In his State of the City speech on Wednesday, Mayor Steinberg proposed mandating housing the homeless and requiring, by civil law, that they accept such housing. Advocates are responding to those mandates. One concern is that civil penalties don't mean much to someone who is homeless and without means to pay a fine. The mayor has said that he's still deciding what he believes the penalties should be, but they would likely include education and/or required rehabilitation support. (KCRA Sacramento)
- The Sacramento teacher that used a racial slur in her classroom is now out of the classroom pending an investigation of the incident. Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jorge Aguilar said he was "appalled and deeply concerned" about the incident. Aguilar says racial bias training is underway districtwide. One of its goals is to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future. (KCRA Sacramento)
- As Sacramento works to crack down on illegal fireworks, the county is using a technology that was originally installed to detect gunfire. The Sheriff's office will be using the so-called ShotSpotter system to detect the exact location where firecrackers and bottle rockets are being used. (CBS Sacramento)

My personal favorite is the mutton busting where kids try to ride the bucking sheep! The painted ladies enter the arena at 6:00. (6 pm)

Sacramento Patch Notebook
- They're serving up a fried chicken ice cream sandwich at Nash & Proper's downtown. You read that right! It's a huge slab of fried chicken and a scoop of vanilla ice cream between two toasted buns. I hear it's crispy, creamy, salty, sweet and cluckin' delicious!
- It's the start of California's fiscal year and, as such, several new laws go into effect today. Make sure you're not in violation of any of them! Oh, and you may notice a new tax at the pump, as well.
