Did Haunted 'Dead And Breakfast' Finally Find Buyer?

WOW House: The residence in Northern California, once home to a mortuary and for sale for two years, now shows an $800K price drop.

DUNSMUIR, CA -- This 1920s home, with a spooky history in Dunsmuir, a Northern California city in Siskiyou County, was listed for sale two years ago for $899,000 and recently underwent a massive price slashing.

The five-bedroom now is listed at $100,000, and its web site shows a sale is pending. So did the property, reportedly the inspiration for "The Mortician's Wife," finally find a buyer?

The most recent owner picked it up as a foreclosure in 2010, dismissing rumors it was haunted, according to Realtor.com's Claudine Zap. But as he began refurbishing the place, "unforeseen forces" came to life, slamming doors, putting out a fire in the fireplace and turning off his computer. Police even were called once when the homeowners reported seeing a hand on a glass bathroom door and thought someone was inside. The owner and his then-wife decided to turn the home into a "Dead and Breakfast," he told writer Zap.

Renovations began, but the couple divorced and the 5,900-square-foot home, across from the Sacramento River, was listed for sale at $899,000 in 2015, then $599,000 in 2016, and dropped to $100,000 in late September.

In the residence's ghostly past, it once housed a mortuary, viewing area and chapel, and, according to the owner, a teenage girl's skeletal remains were left in a basement coffin. The mortician's wife watched as he died at the kitchen table, then retreated to her bedroom and left his body untouched for weeks? Yes, so the story goes.
