Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- Two Elk Grove School District employees are on leave after a small Confederate flag was seen hanging from the air conditioner vent in one of their vans. School officials said that vehicles, like classrooms, must be safe spaces for kids and the Confederate flag is not tolerated. The Elk Grove Parent Coalition called for the immediate firing of the school employees. (ABC10)
- Sacramento's surrounding counties saw a huge surge in violent crime as the pandemic pushed people to desperation. While Sacramento County saw an increase in homicides of about 30%, which was the state average, neighboring San Juaquin County saw a 70% surge and Solano County saw an incredible 90% increase! (CBS Sacramento)
- It's fire season and with the drought this promises to be a doozy. Some Sacramento County residents may find themselves under evacuation warning. If you do, the key is to be prepared! Here's a wildfire evacuation plan checklist that can help. (KCRA3)
- This is the ultimate selfless pay it forward story. This young high school senior was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and was granted a wish from Make-A-Wish. She decided to use her story to raise money for other peoples' wishes. Unfortunately, Samantha Dacong has passed away. Her legacy lives on, however, having raised over $130,000 in her name for wishes to come true. Rest in peace, Sammie. (CBS Sacramento)
- The iconic Jim Dennys is back! Serving up burgers and fries the old fashioned way at this 10-seat diner is chef Joe Pearcy's promise. The restaurant that has been a downtown fixture since 1940 has had a colorful history and this owner is not about to change a thing! (SN&R)
