Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Take a drive out to Eastern Avenue in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood. You will see the street lined with 175 American Flags. The flags have been a tradition for 20 years. Why 20 years? Because they were originally displayed by Susan Clark, who is the sister-in-law of Michael Horrocks. If that name sounds familiar, it is because he was the co-pilot of Flight 175 which was hijacked and flown into the South Tower on 9/11. She used to live in the area and she planted the flags from 7/4 until 9/11 every year to remember him. A volunteer has taken over those duties after she moved from the area. (FOX40)
  2. The Front Street Animal Shelter is waiving all lost pet fees for the rest of the year. While they have an above average return-to-owner rate of 44% they say they believe they can do better. There is usually an uptick of lost pets after the 4th of July weekend, so the shelter decided to start the new program this weekend. Friends of Front Street, a nonprofit organization, is covering the costs. (ABC10)
  3. With the shallow water this year, life vests are particularly important if you're going to be swimming in the rivers in Sacramento, even if you are a good swimmer. Shrubs and rocks are closer to the surface and you can get stuck and not be able to surface. Crews are searching for a man who went under in the river near Rancho Cordova. The El Manto access area of the river where the man was boating is particularly dangerous and known for its unpredictable depths. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. A man riding an electric scooter on Business 80 was struck and killed early Sunday morning. The driver who first struck him told authorities he was traveling in the number 2 lane when he struck the man on the scooter. Minutes after that driver had called 911 to report the incident, police received another report of someone who had struck something in the roadway on the way to Thunder Valley Casino. It is believed that motorist struck the body of the scooter rider. (KCRA3)
  5. Swim lessons and birthday parties are back at the Steve Miklos Aquatic Center in Folsom starting today! Get your requests in early because they are only doing one birthday party per day. There are new giant inflatables for play on the weekends and family swim nights are scheduled from July 15 to 18. (Gold Country Media)

Sacramento Patch Notebook

  • On this day where you still might be feeling a little patriotic, I thought it would be a good time to direct you to this great pamphlet on how to get involved in your local government. It has information on Sacramento City meetings and processes that you can participate in.
  • You had your hot dogs and BBQ yesterday and today you're hankering for some ice cream to chase away the Monday blues. Dare I suggest Devil May Care Ice Cream? With flavors like BBQ potato chip, lavender honey bee pollen and Lucky Charms, there's probably something for the entire family, including weird Uncle Ralph!
