Liberty High QB Butterfield Finds Special Joy In Unified Sports
With offers from top schools, including Cal, Oregon and Michigan, Lions star shares high fives and hugs with unified basketball pals.
You probably know Jay Butterfield as the strong-armed quarterback who guided Liberty High-Brentwood to a 2018 state football championship, the first in school history.
Well, it turns out Butterfield is a giving person as well. The tall gunslinger who has received scholarship offers from a bunch of schools, including Michigan, Oregon and Cal, can be seen cheering on his Liberty High Unified Special Olympics basketball teammates this spring.
It’s heartwarming to see school leaders and future Division I athletes giving back in this way. His special teammates enjoy giving him high fives and hugs.
“This is a very good experience for me and the kids,” Butterfield said after today’s Unified game against Heritage. “They always have a good time out here. Whether it’s win or lose they still have the same face at the end of the day, and that’s what it’s all about, helping out other people.”
In addition to Butterfield, Liberty Unified coach Debbi Weil receives great support from a deep cast of students. They are Peyton Borrelli. another standout on the football team, Emily Jacobson, Josh Hartman, Trudi Hartman, Rylie Manke and Harper Harris.
“I am very fortunate to work with ALL of the students,” Weil said via email.

Butterfield could spend his free time this spring in any number of ways. But he chose to give back.
He says his dad, Mark, the former Stanford quarterback, “always taught me to help others first before yourself and I’m trying to set an example to other people too.”
Classy young man.
