Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- At least 80 fire crew members responded after a mattress company bus caught fire on Sunday afternoon. It happened in the 1400 block of 14th Avenue in the Oak Park area and led to a temporary road closure. (KCRA3)
- This house fire is a cautionary tale that even safe and sane fireworks still pose some risks. These legal fireworks apparently were not properly soaked before being discarded and they later ignited and caused damage to a South Sacramento home. (CBS Sacramento)
- Elk Grove Unified and Sacramento City Unified School Districts have two of the highest rates of Black student suspensions in the state, and both have proportionately much higher rates of Black student suspension than White student suspension. The school districts and the Sacramento County Board of Education said they are aware of the problem and have instituted measures to try and reduce the number of Black suspensions. Dr. J. Luke Wood is working with them to help understand and alleviate the issues of bias. (The Observer)
- ReThink Ice Cream recently moved its headquarters to Sacramento. This ice cream company focuses on making creamy, rich, better-for-you ice cream with all natural ingredients. Its frozen delights are dairy-free, diabetic-friendly, Keto and gluten-free. You can score some of this creamy goodness at several local area stores. (FOX40)
- An inmate who was assigned to a firefighting crew stole the firetruck and went on a joyride in El Dorado County on Sunday. The inmate was helping with a vegetation fire that was started by illegal fireworks when he decided to take off in the flashy ride. It ultimately came to rest in a ditch totaling the vehicle. I'm pretty sure that guy is headed back to the slammer with little chance of fire crew duty ever again. (KCRA3)
