Here are the top 5 stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Mayor Darrell Steinberg gave the State of the City address at the newly remodeled Safe Credit Union Convention Center on Wednesday. The address centered on helping the city's unhoused population, recommending funding of $75M, coming from the city budget, The American Rescue Plan and the Housing Trust Fund. The funds would set up permanent, organized camps, tiny homes and safe parking places, among other housing options. Preceding the mayor's speech, Sacramento's own National Youth Poet Laureate Alexandra Huynh, gave a reading. (ABC10)
  2. A shooting near Sac State University left one person injured and another dead. It is not yet clear what led up to the shooting, but several neighbors heard the gunshots and called police. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the victim after his next of kin have been notified. (KCRA3)
  3. A man found a family of foxes frolicking in his backyard. After finding dead animals like rats and birds in his yard for a couple of days in a row, he set up a camera to find the culprits. He says the foxes are welcome, and the neighbors have even asked him to send them over to take care of the vermin in their yards, too! (CBS Sacramento)
  4. A West Sacramento grandson is bringing beautiful music back from the front lines of WWII. His grandfather and his band made that music decades ago from a tent on the front lines in Manila. So the West Sacramento middle school teacher is partnering with the USO to bring those tunes from vinyl records to CDs for sale and maybe even win a Grammy in the process! (CBS Sacramento)
  5. Gunther's Ice Cream, right here in Sacramento, has been recognized by Food and Wine Magazine as the best ice cream in California! According to the insiders, there's no secret recipe. It's just good, old fashioned, churned ice cream like they've been making for decades. If you're going to live in a place that tops 100 degrees regularly, the best ice cream in California is a great beat the heat treat! (CBS Sacramento)
