Knife-Wielding Man Shot In San Francisco, Police Say

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — An officer shot a man who police say was brandishing a knife Tuesday evening in downtown San Francisco.

The man has been hospitalized and his condition is unknown.

Officers responding to a report of a fight at Fifth and Market streets shortly after 5 p.m. located a man with a knife. "During this contact an officer involved shooting occurred," police said in a news release.

Officers also used less-lethal weapons and a San Francisco Sheriff's Office deputy deployed a Taser, police said.

The area was closed to traffic and the Powell Street BART station was closed for a time.

Police said that a town hall meeting on the officer-involved shooting would be held within 10 days.

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office Independent Investigations Bureau, the Department of Police Accountability, the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division, and the SFPD Internal Affairs Division are conducting investigations.
